Terra is a short film that I used to demonstrate and begin learning the filmmaking possibilities of Unreal Engine. My goal was to tell a fun and minimal story using these vast new tools. I wanted to start simple, using all Quixel Megascans and Epic Marketplace content. This was created on a 2016 iMac without the breadth of visual enhancements that come from a Ray-Traced render GPU, but I wanted to see how much I could push the look working with the basics. All of the sound and original score was created by Andrew Morgan Smith, accompanied by a music track by Mas Donkey.

In 2017, four potentially habitable planets were discovered around a distant star. The first colony vessel NOSTOS now travels to create the first human civilization outside of the solar system. In 12 hours, the main crew will go into hyper-sleep for the distant journey across the void. Reyna, the leading scientists aboard, sits in the observation deck, scouring the Helix Nebula, looking for something she's never seen before. She activates a simulation in the room which places her in the environment of a memory she once had at Fort Tilden beach. Tom, an android aboard the ship is asked to join Reyna, as she seeks to elicit a recognition of intimacy within the synthetic being.
